The Northwest Greenway

The Northwest Greenway takes advantage of the old railway line between Murcia and Caravaca de La Cruz. The works of this railway had started in 1925 and concluded in 1931, showing a special boast in the construction of viaducts, tunnels and stations. Its final closure occurred in 1971.

The Northwest Greenway has about 78 km and along it follow from the lush orchards of the Vega del Segura, to paths of green pine forests, almond trees and lunar landscapes or ‘badlands’ at the mercy of the Mula River. It can also be enjoyed “as we enter the towns that the route crosses” of a very valuable cultural heritage. Along the way, the traveler will also find several rest areas and hostels, old train stations that have been perfectly equipped for this purpose.

In 1998 the section between Baños de Mula – Caravaca de la Cruz was conditioned as a Greenway, and later, in 2011, the remaining section between Baños de Mula – Murcia (Campus de Espinardo) was arranged, both actions being carried out within the Program of “Natural Paths” of the Government of Spain. Subsequently, different route improvements have been carried out in Mula, Alguazas and Campos del Río to recover the original railway route.

In addition, the Greenway, from the town of Molina de Segura, constitutes the final section of the Camino de Levante, a pilgrimage route whose destination is the Holy City of Caravaca de La Cruz. And it is that this city is a focus of religious tourism recognised worldwide as a “holy place” by the Vatican, as it can celebrate the Jubilee Year in perpetuity every seven years.

Riding a bicycle near the sea is an experience that you cannot miss in Mazarrón. This municipality has two mountain bike routes (BTT) along the Murcian coastal strip that are approved by the IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association). And what does that suppose? Well, they are based on sustainability criteria, have a minimum length of 50 km and have a BTT Center. Some sections of the itineraries cover almost intact areas of the Costa Cálida, of great botanical, geological and landscape richness. Without a doubt, the healthiest way to discover the cultural and natural heritage of Mazarrón. Get on the road!
